Summary

  • Formula contains eriobotrya leaf (pi pa ye) which clears heat and phlegm from the lung and stomach
  • Eriobotrya leaf also sends the Qi downwards and thus stops pathogenic heat from rising up to the face
  • The combination of lonicera fruit and forsythia fruit clears heat toxin from the skin
  • Scutellaria clears heat toxin in the upper body and it has anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic actions
  • Rehmannia cools the blood and has moistening action on the skin
  • Gardenia promotes the discharge of heat through the urine
  • Salvia root and red paeonia root are included to help prevent scarring due to their blood activating and stasis dispelling actions
  • Salvia and paeonia root are also cooling and assist the other herbs to reach their target by promoting microcirculation
  • Several of the contained herbs have demonstrated anti-lipemic action and some of these have been found useful in treating skin disorders that are characterised by an excess of oily secretions, such as acne (Crataegus fruit shanzha, salvia root, lonicera flower and glycyrrhiza root)

Indications:

  • Acne vulgaris

TCM Syndromes: 

  • Heat excess (or damp-heat) in the lung and/or stomach
  • Heat toxin (localised in the skin)
  • Blood heat
  • Blood stasis

Key clinical features: 

  • Comedones (open and/or closed)
  • Inflammatory papules and pustules
  • Localised itching, burning and possibly pain

Dosage & warnings

3 capsules twice daily 1 hour away from meals

Caution for those on anti-coagulant medications (i.e. heparin, warfarin or aspirin)
Do not take at the same time of day as iron supplements as the tannins in crataegus fruit interfere with the absorption of iron
Avoid coffee, deep fried foods, high glycemic foods and hydrogenated fats and minimise consumption of saturated fats and red meat
The affected areas should be kept clean
