About Functional Chinese Medicine

Nara Ali Bisset- Registered Practitioner of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine

Nara uses an integrated approach of Traditional Chinese Medicine and modern, evidence-based techniques. As a teenager, her first Chinese Medicine teacher was her Mother who runs a clinic in California. Nara completed a Bachelor degree in Western Clinical Psychology with a pre-med focus before finishing her degree in Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine in Melbourne.

Nara’s treatment style is gentle and nurturing for those who are anxious or sensitive to needles.  She has a keen interest in addressing all issues related to gynaecology, hormones, fertility, and menstrual irregularities including PCOS, Endometriosis, and others. Her Psychology and science background plays a major role in integrating Eastern and Western approaches to Mental Health and the psycho-emotional aspect of physical ailments.

Athletic injuries and pain are of equal interest to Nara in her professional work. Through her practice in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts she understands the necessity for enhanced recovery options for athletes and anyone experiencing acute or chronic pain. She will work diligently with patients to help them recover from injuries and relieve pain, and also restore optimal function so they can get back to living their lives.

Nara is a keen acupuncturist and often combines other methods such as cupping, gua sha (scraping), Tui Na massage, bloodletting and electro-acupuncture. She also prescribes Chinese Herbs and sometimes Western Supplements, as well as dietary therapy and lifestyle adjustments. She may also refer patients to and work alongside other relevant practitioners in her referral network in order to provide the best care for each patient.

Nara genuinely loves this medicine and makes every effort to welcome all people and create a space where patients can learn and participate in their own recovery. If you are interested in working with Nara, please send an email or booking request to get started.

What is Functional Chinese Medicine?

This term describes the practice of traditional techniques in Chinese Medicine supported by modern, Western tools in order to better facilitate restoration of function to organ systems and the body’s innate processes. In the diagnostic sense, the tongue, pulse and the palpation and observation techniques of Chinese Medicine are utilised in combination with relevant orthopaedic tests and any scans or blood tests the patient has been given.

In terms of treatment, traditional methods of acupuncture, cupping, gua sha and bloodletting are used alongside electro-stimulation, supplements and dietary/lifestyle modifications. Referrals to, and ongoing communication with, other types of practitioners are also made when indicated. Overall, Functional Chinese Medicine is grounded in old, traditional theory and practices, and enhanced by modern methods in order to go beyond symptom alleviation to truly restore function to the body at its core. When our systems are functioning optimally, the body can correct imbalances and self-repair as necessary, leading to alleviation of pain and other symptoms, and the pursuit of an enjoyable life.
