What is Functional Chinese Medicine?
This term describes the practice of traditional techniques in Chinese Medicine supported by modern, Western tools in order to better facilitate restoration of function to organ systems and the body’s innate processes. In the diagnostic sense, the tongue, pulse and the palpation and observation techniques of Chinese Medicine are utilised in combination with relevant orthopaedic tests and any scans or blood tests the patient has been given.
In terms of treatment, traditional methods of acupuncture, cupping, gua sha and bloodletting are used alongside electro-stimulation, supplements and dietary/lifestyle modifications. Referrals to, and ongoing communication with, other types of practitioners are also made when indicated. Overall, Functional Chinese Medicine is grounded in old, traditional theory and practices, and enhanced by modern methods in order to go beyond symptom alleviation to truly restore function to the body at its core. When our systems are functioning optimally, the body can correct imbalances and self-repair as necessary, leading to alleviation of pain and other symptoms, and the pursuit of an enjoyable life.
