A niacin flush occurs because vitamin B3 or niacin can cause patchy flushing and tingling as it temporarily dilates small blood vessels near the surface of the skin. This effect usually happens when someone takes a large dose of niacin, but may occur at lower doses in sensitive individuals. This reaction is not harmful and the redness, heat and other symptoms usually subside in an hour or two. With continued use, many people develop tolerance to niacin and no longer exhibit the flushing effect.
